CARELESS WHISPERS, BROTHERLY LOVE AND THE BARKING DOG
A Squarecutter Production

Your two sons, Harvey - 11 and Jason - 16 are the best of pals despite the age gap.

HARVEY - 11

JASON - 16
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Jason does have a different social scene and a lot more freedom but he and Harvey still get along well.  Tonight, Jason is out at a friend's party and is supposed to be home by 11:00PM. Harvey has long been in his bed and your spouse went to bed over an hour ago. You are still up.

Its nearly midnight and Jason is nearly an hour late. You know Jason had his well-charged phone with him but has obviously turned it off as your calls are going directly to voicemail.  You are getting sleepy and start thinking about calling the party hosts when Atticus, the family dog, starts barking and scratching at the french windows leading to the backyard.

"Whats up, boy, you need to go?"  There is more barking and scratching.

Figuring some night air might be good you slide open the doors and follow the dog out. Almost immediately Atticus starts going round to the side of the house and you start hearing some tapping. Then you hear some voices whispering but not quietly enough

Harvey's room is on that side of the house. You heard from Harvey,  "Jase, what you doing here?"

"Shoosh, Harvey, you gotta let me in before I turn into a pumpkin. I forgot my key and I'm really late. I don't want to knock and risk Dad finding out."

"You're crazy, Jase. Dad'll kill me if he catches me."

"C'mon, Harvey , just sneak down the stairs and unlock the kitchen door for me,
Dad'll be watching TV. He'll never know."

"Ohh kaay, What'll you give me?"

"Five bucks."

There is a pause.

"Okay, be there in a sec' . . . Oh shiiit!"

That is when Harvey sees you place an arm on Jason.

The tapping you heard was Jason throwing tiny pebbles at Harvey's window to wake him up.

Jason is sober but obviously has some explaining to do.

What happens to Jason?  Is Harvey in trouble too?

Harvey is not in trouble.

I'm going to ask Jason why he's late. It's just possible that he was trying to be considerate, rather than pulling a fast one. Worst case, assuming he's not doing anything illegal (and the scenario SPECIFIES he's sober), he'll be grounded the rest of the weekend.

I will go with Kier on this one.

Over an hour late and with his phone turned off...?!?

I'm willing to listen, but I think he's getting three bare with the Lexan, not leaving the house tomorrow evening, and a 9pm curfew next weekend. I'm willing to ease up on that a little bit, if he actually has a reason for having the phone off.

Harvey thinks I'll kill him if I catch him, but he's willing to risk it for five dollars. At 11, I think I'm going to announce that he's getting a regular session with the Tailblazer, and then I'll give Jason a chance to talk me out of it. I might suggest letting Jace take it instead of his little brother. If he accepts, I will probably let him off...

But I'll probably make that decision tomorrow morning. I know he did wrong, he knows he did wrong, but he was trying to help his brother. On the other hand, the bribe makes me lean towards spanking.

I like Jack's answer.

I'm aligning with Kier.

Can't really see that Harvey has done anything wrong at this point. While the intention was there the necessary action wasn't.

I try not to nitpick other people's responses, but, in this case, Jason was over an hour late with his phone off - did you mean Harvey?

I'll line up with the Kier group.

If I was at a party my phone would have turned off too.

Harvey gets a lecture on the evils of taking bribes. You could reasonably argue that helping Jason was the right thing to do (helping his brother) or the wrong thing to do (deceiving me), but in any case taking a bribe to do so is not right.

I'll listen to what Jason has to say, but unless he has a great explanation he'll be getting a few paddle swats.

Harvey shouldnt be suggesting bribery and I daresay my arrival at that moment saved him explaining why he'd come downstairs. I do understand him wanting to help his brother. In a sense I'd prefer that than ratting him out. So he gets a little chat about bribery but his behind is safe.

Jason has a lot of explaining to do. Turning his phone off so I couldnt call him once he was late suggests a certain premeditation. Why? Hes in for the belt in the morning and the sleepless night he gets is deserved. It is about not worrying me and respect and deception. I ll keep the phone for a few days unless he Needs to be out for any reason. I say NEEDS as there will be no social engagements for a week.

My older sister is the inspiration for this BOTD. We were much closer in age but it was MY window she threw pebbles at when she needed to get back in! Neither of us were caught those times but My folks had checked her wherabouts after curfew time on occasion and and there were rows about it which didn't involve me

So did you take bribes to let her in? Razz

One thing I forgot about this in my original answer - I need to make sure Atticus gets a treat and a good boy, but warn him to be careful for a few days. He doesn't want to let the boys know who my informer is.
