Your 15-year old son Jake has recently received his hardship license. Your spouse decided to go back to work (for various reasons), and hiring child care made going back worthless. It was decided that Jake would get a car and a hardship license, and picking them up would replace some of his chores (as well as allowing him to get a part time job, that greatly increased his pocket money).

15-year old Jake, and his little brothers: Drew (10) and Luke (11)

Jake has had a bit of trouble in the past with his little brothers, but things have been mostly settled for a while now (thanks to several sore butts in both directions). It's explained to the boys exactly what to expect and how they're supposed to behave.

Things seem to have been going well, but when you get home, the little guys are in a good mood, but Jake is obviously pretty upset at something.

When you ask, he explains that there was a fender bender leaving the school parking lot, and he was maybe six or seven minutes late, but when he got there, the boys were nowhere around. He actually had to park and walk around looking for them. He checked the bad weather meeting point (even though it's not really bad out), and he finally found them, playing with a couple of other kids, out on the play ground. He's upset, because he already had a ton of homework, and it probably took him 30 minutes to find them, and he's just really ticked off.

When you ask Luke and Drew, they just say that he wasn't on time, and they waited, but decided to go play.

What happens next?

I need to get to the bottom of this. If Jake really was only 6 or 7 minutes late I'd want to know why the little boys didn't wait for him However I am a little amazed that it could have taken half an hour for Jake to find the kids on the playground in an elementary school. How big are these places and where would young kids go on the campus while waiting for a ride home. Surely a short walk to the office and he'd have been directed twhere kids were playing after school hours. I dont have enough facts from this as reported so will be interrogating ALL the boys before I decide what to do

A lot depends on how this was set up.

If, there were contingency plans about if Jake was late and the little ones did not follow the rules they are definitely in trouble.  If there were not (shame on me!) such plans, then we are going to work them out.  Printed copies are going into the boys’ school books so that they always have them to refer to.  Also need plans for when they are late.

In any case, Jake needs to have more time so back off on his chores so he can attend to his number one priority -- school.

I'm with YLC. If this was never discussed before, I'm not going to spank the little ones. I'll tell them in front of Jake that in the future they are to wait in the agreed place even if Jake is late, and that there are going to be sore bottoms if they do not. I'll apologize to Jake in the name of the family, and give him a bit of extra pocket money as compensation. But YLC is right, we need to make sure his family duties do not interfere with his first priority: school.

Like Square, I think a bit more discussion needs to happen but I am going to assume that will lead to an answer in the gist of YLC and Daniel. I think we have established that Jake's transportation services are needed and, it appears, on normal days, they are not a hindrance.

I think a proactive response would be to get the little guys a basic cell phone - maybe one they share. (Not a smart phone but just a flip phone that can make basic calls.) That way, in the future, the boys can keep in touch in these sort of situations.

I'll go with Daniel, but the thought of a 15 year old driving scares me. affraid

The office would probably have no idea where two random kids were, unless the kids had checked in there.

And remember - this information came from a ticked off teen, so there is some chance that the 'thirty minutes' might have been exaggerated (or maybe included the time he was already late).

The scenario states that there were (at least some) contingency plans, since there was a specific place they could wait in bad weather.

While the little guys don't have cell phones, the office is staffed for at least 30 minutes past school ending, so 'late parent' calls are accepted there (and attempts made to find students).

This spells (in capitals) "COCK UP"  It is now water under the bridge and the key requirement is to prevent a recurrence.

A discussion about what went wrong and why?  Then making sure the littles are in no doubt about the consequences that will follow if they fail to follow instructions in the future.

Stevie is frightened to post on BOTD:
He can't decide which one to spank since they're all so cute... so they all get a bare bottom hand spanking... Jake just 'cause hes a tattletale and all...
