Hi, I'm Van. I'm 15.

You might remember that, a few weeks ago, my dad told you about some trouble I got in at school. He called it Skipping Class?.

If you don't remember it, the long and short of it is that I'm doing some online, independent study classes, so I have time free for piano practice every afternoon. After doing really well the first semester, I kind of had a rocky start this semester. As a matter of fact, I was several weeks behind by the end of the first six weeks. Dad didn't paddle me for that, but we agreed that I should be on zero tolerance until I got my work caught up, along with some other restrictions, to help make sure I take care of it all.

I got in a little trouble over it a couple of weeks ago, but mostly I was doing pretty good.

But all good things, as they say, come to an end.

We're having a surprise party for my dad. We talked him into going to see Power Rangers, and one of my big brothers said he bought the tickets for all of us. Really, a whole bunch of people were coming, and we'd rented the theater. The only thing is, we had to get Dad out of the house and away from the theater for a bit, and I came up with what I thought was a great idea.

I told Dad that I had left some papers that I had to have with Mr. Yountz. He's mostly Zeke (another brother)'s tutor, but he works with me some if I need help. I told Dad Mr. Y was going out of town early in the morning, so we had to go get them now. I waited until after we'd had dinner, but pretty close to the time Dad thought the movie was starting, so everyone else could get there and get things set up.

There was one problem.

When you're on zero tolerance, stuff like forgetting important, must have papers is an automatic paddling offense. Since I'd already had one, that meant I was due three swats with the small Jokari on my bare butt. And now, Dad has decided to apply the swats before we go get the papers!

Is it worth taking the swats to keep the surprise? What should I do?

Take the swats. Later on. your Dad will feel so guilty he may even let you get another pet...

How about a Great Dane puppy?

scratch This is hard.

Your dad is always reasonable and would probably let you delay your spanking.

Tell him you know you deserve the swats but that you REALLY need him to wait until bedtime.

If that fails then go with Uncle Stevie's answer but I suggest a micro-pig instead. I love you

You could ask for one of these:

The Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal

Take the swats and then later after Dad learns that you lied you can claim credit.

That sounds like a good suggestion to me, Van.

K Club. Failing that, I like Stevie's answer. Your dad is a very fair man--should you not be successful getting him to delay, you've likely earned a "get out of jail free" card.

My thought was also that: beg to wait until after the movie. Explain how a sore bottom would spoil the experience for you, and can we please, please, please wait until after the movie?

"NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED"

Dunno where that twaddle came from but its apt here.

Take it.  Afterwards you'll feel good about yourself.  (Well! Most of you will) Wink

DB came very close to what actually happened. However, the truth is, this situation never came up.

I was ticked at Van for 'forgetting' the papers, and I thought about letting him know that he'd violated his zero tolerance, but whether I paddled him there or waited, it would have made the drive to get them very tense. I decided not to mention it, and that we could talk about it later. Because of that decision, Van never had to decide if he should spill the beans, and I never had to feel guilty about an unfair paddling. (It was actually a set up to get me out of the house and to the theater late, and there wasn't anything Van had to get - Mr. Y just gave him a couple of papers related to his classes, but nothing he had to have.)
