The Very Cruel April Fool's Prank
A Stevie Production

You have two sons, Joseph,  7, and Lister, 10
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Normally, the two get on reasonably well with a reasonable amount of sibling rivalry; but the two boys do seem to love and care for one another on the whole with one exception...

Lister has a tendency to get carried away with practical jokes and it's now April first and all...

Little Joseph has had a bed wetting problem since he was little, but lately, with the aid of Imiprine, which he was started on just after his last birthday, he's been staying dry at night, to his (and your) great relief. He's recently stopped wearing diapers (Goodnites) to bed and is a much happier little boy in consequence; the occasion of taking finally them off for good was marked by his being taken out to his favourite restaurant and a movie in celebration.

Very early on April Fool's Day, Lister awoke and began to execute his prank by urinating into an empty water bottle, then creeping into his little brother's room, and emptying it into Joseph's bed in between his legs to look like the younger boy had wet his bed again...

Unfortunately for Lister, Joseph awoke while Lister was doing this, and filled the house with piercing screeches when he realised what his older sibling was up to.

You arise out of a heavy sleep, and walk into Joseph's room, accompanied by screaming, crying, and rather pointless protestations of innocence to find your younger son's bedding soaked far more thoroughly than it would normally have been during the bedwetting period... luckily, the rubber sheeting had not yet been removed so you are not facing having to replace the mattress and all.

Lister finally faces the pair of you and says sheepishly "It was only an April Fool"...

What do you do now?

There is no way I can look past this as just a "prank."  I am too angry to deal with Lister right now so I will send him to bed and dare him to move from bed until I come for him later in the morning.

I will get Joseph cleaned up and in fresh sheets and help him calm down. Hopefully we can all get a few more hours sleep.

I will wake Lister up (assuming he was able to sleep) and bare his butt.  Lister will get a very long and very hard hand spanking followed by a harsh session with the belt.  Lister can do ALL of Joseph's chores for a week. Mad Mad

Jokes are only funny if BOTH parties find them funny. Otherwise, they're bullying. This so-called prank goes beyond even that.

Like Katz, I'm sending Lister to bed and God help him if he moves from there before I've told him he can.

I'll get Joey cleaned up, bedding changed, and back to sleep, and hopefully get a little more sleep myself.

In the morning the three of us will talk. Hopefully with the calm of day I can get Lister to see that this was WAY more than an April Fool's Joke. Joey can then go watch cartoons or something while I deal with his brother. While I think the spanking Katz' detailed if OTT for a 10 year old (at least MY 10 year old), what he gets will be a spanking he'll never forget.

Damage control at first and that is to tend to Joseph’s trauma.  While doing that get Lister at working at getting things cleaned up -- laundry to washing area and drying and remaking the bed.   Then banishment back to his room and my mother’s favorite line -- "'Tain't funny, McGee!"

Lister might prefer to be spanked but that’s not the punishment.  He wet the bed -- albeit not in the usual way or even his own but that does not matter.  He is going to suffer the fate that he put Joseph at risk for.  He’s back in diapers until he has sufficient dry nights not to require them.  If there is any wet/dry night chart or the like then that also.  I don’t think he’ll find it funny although his friends might.

Joseph will probably find that funny enough for a few laughs.

I agree with Dave and Kier; Lister's butt will be (figuratively) blistered due to this bullying he pulled. I like Dave's concept of having him do all the chores for the week to atone for the stunt he pulled.

OK, I'll tone down the spanking but Lister's still going to find it very memorable and he will be one very sore and sorry boy.

April Fools is a day normally marked by mean, stupid, or just plain pointless pranks.

The scenario says that Lister 'has a tendency' to get carried away with these jokes. It does not say if he's a practical joker the rest of the year. It does not say if I've done anything to curtail his enthusiasm in the past.

Here's the thing - wetting the bed is not a big deal. It's something that happens because your body doesn't work quite right. It would be like making a huge deal because a kid needs glasses. If Joseph (and/or Lister) thank it is a big deal, it's because I've been making a big deal out of it.

If Lister has been warned before about his practical jokes, then he will be punished. Whether he's been warned or not, Joseph is going to go get cleaned up, then go back to sleep in his big brother's bed, and Lister is going to be responsible for cleaning everything up and properly remaking his brother's bed. I will also suggest that if he wants any harmony in the house, he needs to apologize, and if I haven't warned him before about considering how the recipient will feel about the joke, I'll do so now - along with a very firm warning about what will happen to his butt the next time I have to deal with this.

I had to think a fair amount before posting this. Right now, I have a 6 and 7 year old who both sleep in Good Nites, and I consider them lucky, because when Matt, Jason, and I were growing up, we didn't have those. I can understand why this might be a bit upsetting to Joseph in this scenario, but I don't see it as worse than a lot of the other pranks that seem to occur on this day.

So you don't think you're going to blister Lister?

I do not think I'll be adding a 'b' to his name at this time.

For those that did not catch the significance of the brilliant names Stevie selected: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Lister

The brand name "Listerine" is derived from the gentleman's name.
