I received a bit of follow up to this today, which I thought I'd share.

"Hey Uncle Jack!"

"Hello, Evan. Chas, Linc, Perry."

"Hey Uncle Jack."

"Anyway, thanks for the party next week. It's gonna be great."

"Glad to hear it."

"You runts take off. I gotta talk to Uncle Jack a minute."

Various complaints about being called runts, but they take off when Perry pretends to glower.

"What's up?" I asked.

"Dad told me something, and I thought you should know."

"You sure this is something you should be sharing?"

"I don't think he'll mind."

I shrugged, leaving it up to him.

"Dad said there were two reasons he's letting you throw a party for me. He said your argument was actually kind of facile. He said that you get to spend time with us, and we hang out at your pool and with our friends a lot. Then he said that, on the other hand, you really have treated us like family, and getting to do something special like a birthday party is pretty different."

"Well, he might have a point, but it sounds like we came to the same conclusion."

"Yeah."

"What was the other reason?"

"He said, if he don't let you, you might whip him instead."

"Guess that's a good reason, too."

Judging by the way he was laughing, Perry had really been waiting to share that.

Since Perry doesn't have a bio yet, I thought I'd deal with this here.

Perry is now 17. His birthday was yesterday. We were forecast to have severe thunderstorms and it was supposed to rain all day.

Nope.

We had a cold front come through yesterday evening, and we did get some rain last night, but none yesterday (it all passed south of us, from what I could tell), and Perry's party went off a planned. We did move it up a couple of hours, hoping the kids could get in some time before it got bad, but that did work out with the cold front.

Perry expected a basic party, but we did set up decorations. We had a big marble cake (and a couple of others) and ice cream. I grilled burgers and dawgs, and we had pizza and fried chicken as well.

You could tell Perry was surprised when he arrived and saw everything. Even though some of his friends (even ones I don't know well) were already there, I not only got that lopsided, rather boyish grin, but a big hug - in public!

The kids had a great time and were well behaved. I had a couple of young ladies come up and talk to me about the music (carefully chosen to be a mixture, not boring, and acceptable to parents with kids at a Christian school). I did leave them alone for a while, so they didn't even feel to chaperoned, I hope.

Overall, Perry assured me it was an incredible party, and he had a fantastic time, and I am an awesome uncle. So I'm guessing he liked it.

I'm glad the weather cooperated and Perry had the party he deserved.
