Needs Must
A Memory Man Production

Your son Liam is a robust eight year old.  He is a happy genial good natured kid but he does have a habit of testing his boundaries and consequently has found himself bared and across your lap on a number of occasions.  You hand spank him but recently you have introduced him to the strap that that used to roast your rump - just a single whack to sign off a spanking and remind him how much worse it could have been, and will be when he's older.

Liam's third birthday present was the puppy he'd been craving, he called it Rip and he looks after it almost single handedly, consequently the two have become inseparable to the point that Rip mopes when he is at school.  You live on the outskirts of town with plenty of open heath land around where Liam can exercise him and they can play around together.

Nearby is a dense wood, a dangerous place for kids where there is a known danger from adders and also where other "things" have happened in the past.  Liam has been forbidden (on pain of a severe strapping) to ever go there without you accompanying him.

This afternoon Rip got out and ran off.  Your wife with a toddler to look after was unable to catch him.  For once Rip didn't run in the direction of the school and when Liam got home to take him out he was distraught, he played war with his mother as she made him change out his school clothes before running out to search for him.

Both were was still missing when you got home and set out to look for them.  As you went towards the wood you found them emerging.

Liams's eyes were puffy from crying whilst the rest of his face was a mask of mixed emotions, relief, satisfaction and ............ trepidation.

Is your heart about to melt?  Or is cowhide about to meet boyhide?

I will talk with Liam to try to get the full story of what happened- and why. I will guess that Liam will tell me that the dog "ran off" into the woods. If this is what I am, in fact told, I will tell Liam that from here on out, it will be necessary to keep Rip on a leash of sufficient length so as to prevent Rip from entering those woods.

I will then give Liam the same spanking that he got beforehand, and the single dose of the strap. After this, I will explain about the leash, and that no excuses for the dog not being on a leash are going to be allowed. If there are any problems with Rip- he is to come and get me. Indeed, that is exactly what should have happened in this case.

Rip didn't escape while he was with Liam per the scenario. He got out while my spouse was supposed to be watching him. I'd have been beyond frantic had that happened when I was 8 (it did, and I was), and I would be today.

His MOTHER should have called me when she was unable to catch the dog. Instead, she presented a little boy with the news the thing he holds most dear in the world is out running around, perhaps never to be seen again. It's no surprise to me he took off to look for him himself.

He's returned, dog in hand, and distraught. There is no way in Hell I am spanking or remonstrating with Liam. Biscuits (human and dog) all around, and hot cocoa for boy and water for his best friend.

I agree 100% with Kier.  This case was an exception to my rule.  It would have been better if Liam had not gone in the wood, but I perfectly understand why he did.  No leather for Liam.

I agree with Mr. AFinch.

The next thing on the agenda is enclosing my property with a simple barrier such as http://www.redbrand.com/images/SheepGoatPhoto.jpg to prevent any further mishaps.

I agree with Kier and Adric and with Coyote's added measure.

I agree with Kier & Adric.

I'd also say that for all we know from the scenario the property could already be enclosed as the reference is to the dog 'getting out' which to me implies escaping rather than simply wandering off.

At first, I thought this must be a house dog. Seeing that picture, it would be cruel for Rip not to have a lawn in which to run.

No, this is a special case where a number of things went wrong. I'm going to assume that Liam was walking around, saw Rip, and just ran in to meet him. I will remind Liam why he needs to stay out of that area, and Rip will begin taking obedience classes to help avoid this in the future.

I'm in agreement with everyone else. Pets are members of the family and we do whatever is necessary to find them.

I was in a hurry when I read the thing and did not see the situation as I should have. I do agree with Kier and all of everyone else's view here.

Honestly, if the dog got lost in the woods, there would only be one way to solve the problem

Spoiler:

Fido, fetch Rip and there's some raisins in it for you!

I agree with the consensus. This a (Very) rare exception to the rule. Am surprised at the Mothers reactions, Do I take it she and Rip don't get on since Rip pines for the little guy when he's out?
