Treading Water
A mahoover Production

Your son John is a junior at a private school.  One of the reasons that he is attending the school is because it has a swim team.  John is a very good swimmer and competes at both the high school level and in US Swimming.  Last weekend he went with his US Swimming team to a out of town three day meet.  There were sessions on Friday afternoon, Saturday morning and afternoon, and Sunday afternoon.  Normally you would have gone with him, but because of work, you couldn't.  It wasn't a huge problem because the team coach always has some swimmers that their parents can't attend and he is responsible for at the meet and at the hotel.

It is Wednesday, and one of your co-workers whose son is on the team asks you what you did about the incident at the last meet.  You haven't heard anything about it, so you ask him what happened.  Some of the seniors brought a bottle of rum to the meet, and Saturday night everyone tried out Rum and Cokes.  The coach discovered the party before things got out of hand, and sent all of the swimmers to bed.  Then Sunday morning he ran a "special" practice.  He had them do 25 yard sprints as fast as they could until they collapsed.  He also sent a letter home with each swimmer that he wanted signed and returned.

What happens to John?

I'm going to tell him what I've heard and asked about it. I suppose it's possible that John actually wasn't there, and so wasn't included.

If, as I suspect, John signed the letter on his own, we'll be having a long talk about it. A talk is where things would have ended, since the coach handled it to his satisfaction. Now, we have both the illegal drinking and the missing letter.

If he did sign the letter himself, he'll be receiving a vicious letter, a day in seclusion, and that day will probably start and possibly end with a very sore butt.

I'm with Jack. Let's check what happened. If it turns out that he got the letter and forged my signature he is in trouble, including a paddling. Without the forgery the coach's punishment would have been enough.

I agree with Jack and Daniel. No further punishment for the rum and coke, and the works (CP and all that goes with it) if he committed any forgery.

NOTHING

The coach resolved the issue to his satisfaction, the rest is third party hearsay that "everyone was involved"

I do not go with the concept of "Guilty until proved innocent"

"He also sent a letter home with each swimmer that he wanted signed and returned."

My response has to depend on whether the 'each swimmer' means everyone who was at the meet, all of the seniors or just all of those caught drinking.

It is quite feasible that my son didn't have a letter, but if he did then there will be consequences - but only in respect of that as coach dealt with the drinking t the time. My consequences would also be non cp.

Like everyone else, I agree with Jack. If he did hide/forge the letter, part of the talk I will have with him is about trust, and how lost trust takes a long time to regain.

Ah, yes! Rum. Good stuff. Shouldn't be spoiled with gassy coca. I'm going to whack him!

I agree with the rest of you. The drinking was dealt with but woe betide dishonesty. John is not a little boy any more. And I will be checking withe the Coach whether John was involved
