Timmy Zaps Rocky
An 18Smacked Production

You looked out the back window a few minutes ago and saw Timmy, your 7 year-old son playing with Rocky, your 4 year-old Golden Retriever. Rocky is a dog that barks maybe twice a year, so when you hear a shrill screech, you know something serious has happened. You run out to the yard, and Timmy is suddenly extremely hesitant to tell you why Rocky yelped so loudly and is now cowering in the corner of the yard. This is highly odd, as normally Rocky and Timmy are the closest of friends, and the dog is practically glued to your son's leg.

After lots of hemming and hawing, Timmy admits that he had used your stun gun on the dog, "just to see what happened." The stun gun, a mini version of the Taser that the police use delivers a lesser zap than the full version, but is still a formidable weapon. You have been very careful to instruct your son not to touch or use the stun gun.

When it comes to sting, the usual sting that your son feels is when he is spanked by your hand on his bare bottom. But, a couple of months ago, you began introducing him to a wooden paddle.

What actions do you take with your son, and how can you help him to realize the gravity of what he did?

Kier,

I have a serious question for you.  Would it cause medical harm to Timmy if I were to zap him?  If there would be no lasting harm to my son then possibly the best lesson is a zap from the stun gun.

(Hey, everyone, don't judge me. You know you entertained the idea. I just was stupid enough to write it down. Razz )

------------------------------------------

If I can't zap my kid then the paddle is coming out and the jeans and undies are coming down.

Does Rocky need to see the vet?

Punishment is unnecessary.

Rocky will never trust him again. Period.

Timmy has lost a friend for good.

This is a perfect example of natural consequences and all...

It might... especially if Timmy has a hidden heart defect... these things are dangerous and Stevie, for one, would not advise risking it...

I'll go for the paddle - it's effects are more predictable and it's certainly safer.

As for the stun gun, they are generally called sub-lethal but that hardly means harmless.  Assuming Kier thinks there should be no permanent damage, I would first have to try the thing on myself before I could decide whether to let Timmy have a taste.

How did Timmy get his hands on that anyway?  It should be locked in my gun case with all my shotguns and pistols.

(I don't really have any gun case, shotguns, or pistols.)

I think Rocky will soon decide that Timmy is okay after all.  Dogs can be very forgiving.

Timmys getting zapped, with the paddle. He was told and to use it on Rocky was just mean. Dogs are more forgiving beasts than I am

Timmy is getting a deluxe bare butt paddling + either 2 licks from the strap and 10min bare butt corner time with his hands on his head. The guns are locked up, but the stun gun was in his Mom's purse. She keeps it there because it's dark when she gets off work, and she has to parking in a parking garage. He has been told several times that it is not a toy, and can hurt someone very bad. He has also been in trouble before for getting into his Mom's purse before. He know that it is the same as getting something out of my wallet without asking, and is stealing.

Stun guns are not guns they look more like a flashlight, and have a button that you have to press and hold not a trigger because they don't shoot. You have to hold the button down, and then press the end against how you want to shock. This means he would have had to shock the dog on purpose.

He is getting an extra harsh punishment because a stun gun keeps shocking until either take it off who, or what you are shocking and/or let go of the button. Dogs can't not handle as much of a shock as a person, so he easily could have killed the dog.

Before and after his punishment we will be having a very long talk about his actions, and what could has happened to Rocky.

Timmy is 7 years old and he was curious, not malicious. That's not an excuse for what happened, but it is something to consider.

First we're going to take care of Rocky. I'm kind of surprised that Timmy was hemming and hawing instead of bawling. As it is, I'm going to put the stun gun away, get Rocky to come to us, and give him a lot of pets. Then we'll call the vet.

When we're sure Rocky's okay, Timmy and I are going to go to his room and talk about minding and understanding what dangerous really means (and why he needs to trust me when I warn him something is dangerous). Then he's going to get his little bare bottom thoroughly paddled, but I will make very sure he understands it's for disobedience.

I'm with Jack on this one. And Dave, Stevie is correct--using a stun gun on a 7 year old (or anyone) is potentially hazardous. It's more benign than a bullet, but it isn't without risk.

I agree with Jack.

I tend to agree that Timmy wasn't malicious based on his and Rocky's prior relationship. The only counter to that is him not apparently being upset at Rocky's reaction.

On the whole though I'm in agreement with Jack's response.

Timmy will get his bare behind paddled for being cruel to his dog. I need my bare behind paddled even more, for leaving a stun gun within a 7-year-old's reach.

Ah, yes. Rocky. Actually, I had a dog named Timmy.

Anyway, I'm going to whack that boy!

Understandable. One of the most famous dogs in the history of children's fiction is called Timmy, after all.

I'm changing my answer to Jack's answer, because I think it's a really good answer.

The above reflects my sentiments here!

For those who may have wondered- this BOTD was not based upon any RL situation that I was aware of through anything I saw or read. But, that being said, I would be shocked if this had not played itself out in RL somewhere. Parents are far too lax in keeping such things out of small hands, and kids being the curious types that they are, will, simply out of immature childhood curiosity, try such "experiments "to see what happens."

It occurred to me that this might make for an interesting scenario to have for a BOTD. I hope all enjoyed it!
